Essential Oils for Homemade Candles: A Complete Guide to Creating Perfect Candles

written by Michael Grant May 15, 2025

Creating Homemade Candles with Essential Oils

Have you ever wanted to make your own candles at home? If so, you're in for a treat! Making your own candles not only allows you to customize them with your favorite scents but also provides a sense of accomplishment. One of the key ingredients to making the perfect homemade candle is the use of essential oils. In this article, I’ll share my experience and knowledge about using essential oils for homemade candles, including why they’re the best option and how you can create the perfect scented candles at home.

Why Use Essential Oils for Homemade Candles?

Essential oils are plant-based oils extracted through steam distillation or cold pressing, and they have natural, therapeutic properties. When used in candles, they release a pleasant fragrance that is much stronger and more natural than synthetic fragrances. I was drawn to using essential oils in my candles because they create an atmosphere that is both calming and invigorating. Unlike synthetic fragrances, essential oils are free from harsh chemicals, which makes them a great choice if you are sensitive to certain scents.

For instance, lavender essential oil is known for its calming effects, making it perfect for a relaxing evening at home. On the other hand, citrus oils like orange or lemon can uplift your mood and energize your environment. Essential oils are not just about scent; they bring an element of aromatherapy into your space, providing health benefits like stress reduction and improved air quality.

Choosing the Best Essential Oils for Your Candles

When it comes to selecting essential oils for your homemade candles, it all depends on the atmosphere you want to create. There are numerous options, each with its unique fragrance and therapeutic properties. Here are some of my top picks for essential oils to use in homemade candles:

  • Lavender: Ideal for relaxation and stress relief. It’s perfect for creating a soothing environment in your living room or bedroom.
  • Peppermint: Refreshing and invigorating, peppermint is great for creating a fresh and clean aroma in your kitchen or bathroom.
  • Orange: This citrus oil provides an uplifting and cheerful scent. It’s ideal for brightening up any room.
  • Eucalyptus: Known for its ability to clear the air and improve breathing, eucalyptus essential oil is perfect for your home office or study area.
  • Cinnamon: Warm and spicy, cinnamon is great for fall and winter months, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere.

How Much Essential Oil Should You Use?

One of the common questions I had when I first started making candles was, “How much essential oil do I need to use?” The general rule of thumb is to use around 1 ounce of essential oil per pound of wax, but this can vary depending on your personal preference for scent strength. Some people prefer a lighter scent, while others want a stronger fragrance that fills the room. I recommend starting with the standard amount and adjusting according to how strong you want the scent to be.

Steps to Make Homemade Candles with Essential Oils

Now that we know why essential oils are fantastic for homemade candles and how to choose the right ones, let’s get into the process of making your own candles. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Gather Your Materials: You’ll need wax (soy wax is a popular choice), a wick, a container or mold, and your chosen essential oils. You can also use a double boiler to melt the wax, and a thermometer to ensure it reaches the right temperature.
  2. Melt the Wax: Place the wax in the double boiler and melt it slowly over low heat. Stir occasionally to ensure an even melt. Use a thermometer to monitor the temperature – you want it to reach around 170°F.
  3. Add the Essential Oils: Once your wax has melted, remove it from the heat and allow it to cool slightly. Add your essential oils, stirring gently to combine. The amount you add will depend on the strength of the scent you desire.
  4. Attach the Wick: While the wax is cooling, secure the wick in the center of your container or mold. You can use a wick holder to keep it centered.
  5. Pour the Wax: Carefully pour the melted wax into your container, leaving about half an inch from the top. Let it set for about 4 hours at room temperature.
  6. Trim the Wick: Once the candle is fully set, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch above the surface of the wax.

Creative Ideas for Scent Combinations

Once you get the hang of making your own candles, you can start experimenting with different scent combinations. Combining essential oils not only creates a unique fragrance but also enhances the therapeutic benefits of your candles. For example, you can mix lavender and eucalyptus for a calming and refreshing aroma, or blend citrus oils like orange and lemon for an energizing and uplifting scent.

Why I Love Making Candles with Essential Oils

Making my own candles with essential oils has been such a rewarding experience. Not only do I get to customize the scents to suit my mood or the season, but I also enjoy knowing that the ingredients I’m using are natural and safe. Each time I light one of my homemade candles, I feel like I’ve created something special that adds a personal touch to my space. Plus, they make wonderful gifts for family and friends!

If you're ready to dive into the world of homemade candles, I highly recommend starting with essential oils. They are a simple yet effective way to add both fragrance and wellness to your home.
