How to Create a DIY Essential Oil Hand Sanitizer at Home

How to Create a DIY Essential Oil Hand Sanitizer

In today’s world, hand sanitizers have become a staple in every bag, car, and home. But with concerns over the ingredients in store-bought sanitizers, I’ve started making my own DIY essential oil hand sanitizer. It’s a simple, effective, and natural way to keep my hands clean without the harsh chemicals. I’ve learned a lot about creating a good hand sanitizer over the past year, and I’m excited to share my process with you!

1. Why Choose Essential Oils for Your Hand Sanitizer?

When I first started thinking about making my own hand sanitizer, I wanted to use natural ingredients that wouldn’t dry out my skin. Essential oils not only have natural antibacterial properties but also smell incredible. I’ve learned that some oils, like lavender, tea tree, and eucalyptus, are known for their ability to fight germs and bacteria while being gentle on the skin.

In addition to being a safer alternative to synthetic chemicals, essential oils are versatile. I can mix and match different oils depending on what I’m in the mood for, whether it’s a refreshing citrus blend or a soothing floral scent. This customization makes DIY hand sanitizers a fun and personal way to create the perfect blend for your needs.

2. The Basic Ingredients for DIY Essential Oil Hand Sanitizer

Making your own hand sanitizer is surprisingly simple and only requires a few ingredients. Here’s a basic recipe that I use:

  • 2/3 cup of isopropyl alcohol (99%): This is the key ingredient for killing germs. The higher the alcohol content, the more effective the sanitizer will be. I always opt for 99% to ensure maximum effectiveness.
  • 1/3 cup of aloe vera gel: Aloe vera is soothing for the skin and helps balance out the dryness caused by the alcohol.
  • 10-20 drops of essential oils: This is where you can get creative! I love using a mix of tea tree, lavender, and peppermint oils for a refreshing, cleansing scent.
  • Optional – Vitamin E oil: If you have sensitive skin or want to add extra moisturizing properties, a few drops of Vitamin E oil can do wonders. It also helps to preserve the shelf life of the sanitizer.

Once you’ve gathered these ingredients, you’re ready to start creating your hand sanitizer!

3. Step-by-Step Process: How to Make DIY Essential Oil Hand Sanitizer

Making your own hand sanitizer is an easy and quick process. Here’s how I do it:

  1. Mix the alcohol and aloe vera gel: In a bowl, combine the isopropyl alcohol and aloe vera gel. I always make sure to mix them thoroughly so that they blend into a smooth, even texture.
  2. Add the essential oils: This is the fun part! I add around 10-20 drops of essential oils, depending on how strong I want the scent. For a fresh and invigorating aroma, I use a combination of lemon, eucalyptus, and lavender oils.
  3. Stir in optional ingredients: If you’re using Vitamin E oil or other skin-loving ingredients, now is the time to add them. I usually add 2-3 drops of Vitamin E to help keep my hands moisturized.
  4. Transfer to a container: Pour your mixture into a small, empty bottle or spray container. I always make sure to label the bottle so that I can easily recognize it later.

And that’s it! I always give it a good shake before using it to ensure all the ingredients are properly mixed. It’s ready to use whenever you need it!

4. Customizing Your DIY Essential Oil Hand Sanitizer

One of the best things about making your own essential oil hand sanitizer is how customizable it is. Depending on your preferences, you can experiment with different combinations of essential oils. For instance, if I want something that’s more calming and soothing, I’ll add a few drops of lavender or chamomile oil. On the other hand, if I’m looking for something energizing and uplifting, I’ll opt for citrus oils like orange, lemon, or grapefruit.

Here are a few of my favorite essential oil combinations:

  • Tea Tree + Lavender + Peppermint: This is a great all-purpose hand sanitizer that’s refreshing and has antibacterial properties.
  • Citrus Blend (Lemon, Orange, Grapefruit): A bright and uplifting scent that’s perfect for when you need a little extra energy.
  • Lavender + Chamomile: A soothing, calming scent that’s perfect for evening use or when you need to unwind.
  • Eucalyptus + Rosemary: A more earthy, invigorating blend that’s great for clearing your mind and promoting relaxation.

Feel free to experiment with different oils to find the perfect scent that works for you. You can even adjust the number of drops to make the fragrance as light or as strong as you prefer.

5. Storing and Using Your DIY Essential Oil Hand Sanitizer

Once your hand sanitizer is made, it’s important to store it properly. I keep mine in a small, portable spray bottle that I can easily carry in my bag or keep in my car. When using it, I simply spray a small amount onto my hands and rub them together until they feel dry. The best part is, this DIY hand sanitizer doesn’t leave my hands feeling sticky or greasy, which is a common issue with commercial sanitizers.

As with any homemade product, it’s essential to make sure you use it within a reasonable timeframe. I generally find that my homemade sanitizer lasts for a few months. If you’re making a larger batch, try storing it in a cool, dark place to preserve the quality of the essential oils and the aloe vera gel.
