Essential Oils for Making Homemade Candles: A Natural Way to Scent Your Home

written by Sarah Thompson Apr 10, 2025

Creating Beautiful Homemade Candles with Essential Oils

Over the years, I’ve become increasingly interested in DIY projects that not only add a personal touch to my home but also provide natural benefits. One of my favorite hobbies has become making my own candles. There's something incredibly satisfying about crafting a beautiful, aromatic candle that you can enjoy every day. The best part is that by using essential oils, you can make your candles smell amazing and even boost your mood or promote relaxation. I’ve spent quite a bit of time experimenting with different essential oils for my homemade candles, and I’m excited to share my experiences with you. If you’ve ever wondered how to incorporate essential oils into candle making, this guide is for you.

1. Why Use Essential Oils in Homemade Candles?

When I first started making candles, I was initially drawn to the vibrant colors and the fun of mixing wax. But soon, I realized that the true magic of candles lies in their fragrance. I wanted my candles not only to look beautiful but also to provide a soothing and natural scent that would fill my home. That’s when I discovered the power of essential oils. Essential oils offer a natural way to fragrance your candles without relying on synthetic scents, which can sometimes be overpowering or even harmful to your health.

Using essential oils in homemade candles brings a variety of benefits. First, they allow you to customize the fragrance to suit your preferences and the mood you want to create. Whether you’re looking for a calming lavender scent for a relaxing evening or a refreshing citrus aroma to brighten up a room, essential oils give you the flexibility to create your perfect scent profile. Additionally, essential oils are packed with therapeutic properties, and many people, like myself, enjoy the benefits of aromatherapy through their candles. Whether you’re using them for relaxation, stress relief, or simply to freshen up your space, essential oils make homemade candles even more special.

2. Choosing the Right Essential Oils for Your Candles

Once I realized how much essential oils could enhance my homemade candles, I started experimenting with different oils. The beauty of using essential oils is that there’s no shortage of options, and each oil offers its own unique scent and benefits. Here are some of my favorite essential oils to use in candle making, each of which can help create a specific atmosphere in your home:

1. Lavender

Lavender essential oil is by far one of my most used oils in candle making. Its calming and soothing properties make it a perfect choice for creating candles that promote relaxation and stress relief. I love lighting a lavender candle after a long day, as it helps to unwind and create a peaceful ambiance. Lavender also blends well with other oils, such as chamomile or rosemary, making it a versatile option for combining different scents in your candles.

2. Eucalyptus

If you’re looking for a refreshing, invigorating scent, eucalyptus is an excellent choice. It has a clean, crisp fragrance that’s perfect for waking up the senses and refreshing a room. Eucalyptus essential oil also has antiseptic properties, making it a great addition to candles for areas like the kitchen or bathroom. I’ve found that eucalyptus blends beautifully with peppermint or citrus oils, creating a crisp and energizing scent that’s perfect for mornings or when you need a burst of energy.

3. Lemon

Lemon essential oil is another go-to fragrance in my candle-making process. The bright, zesty scent is perfect for lifting the mood and creating a fresh, clean atmosphere. Lemon is a wonderful choice for candles in the kitchen, as its fresh fragrance helps neutralize odors while filling the space with a pleasant citrus aroma. It also pairs wonderfully with other citrus oils, such as orange or lime, creating a vibrant, uplifting scent profile.

4. Sandalwood

Sandalwood essential oil is ideal if you’re looking to create a warm, grounding ambiance. I love using sandalwood in candles for cozy evenings or meditation sessions. The rich, woodsy scent adds a layer of depth to any candle, making it perfect for creating a peaceful and serene atmosphere. Sandalwood also blends well with floral oils like rose or jasmine, creating a beautiful balance between earthy and floral notes.

5. Rose

For a romantic and luxurious touch, I often use rose essential oil in my homemade candles. Rose has a sweet, floral scent that’s perfect for creating an inviting and calming environment. I particularly enjoy burning rose-scented candles during special occasions or in the bedroom to set a relaxing, intimate mood. Rose essential oil can also help relieve stress and anxiety, making it an excellent choice for candles intended to promote peace and relaxation.

3. How to Make Homemade Candles with Essential Oils

Now that you have a better understanding of the benefits of using essential oils in candles, let me walk you through the process of making your own. It’s simpler than it sounds and can be a fun, creative way to customize your candles. Here’s how I make my homemade candles with essential oils:

1. Gather Your Materials

To get started, you’ll need a few basic supplies: soy wax (or your preferred wax), essential oils, candle wicks, a double boiler or a heat-safe bowl, a thermometer, and your containers (such as mason jars or glass jars). I prefer using soy wax because it’s natural, burns cleanly, and holds scent well. You can also find wax blends specifically designed for candle making that will enhance the burn time and scent throw.

2. Melt the Wax

The next step is to melt the wax. I use a double boiler method by placing the wax in a heat-safe bowl over a pot of simmering water. This helps to gently melt the wax without overheating it. Keep an eye on the temperature with a thermometer—most wax melts at around 170-180°F. It’s important not to overheat the wax, as this can affect the final texture and scent of the candle.

3. Add Essential Oils

Once the wax is fully melted, it’s time to add your essential oils. I typically add about 1 ounce of essential oil for every pound of wax, but this can be adjusted depending on how strong you want the fragrance. I love blending different oils to create a custom scent. For example, I might add lavender and sandalwood for a calming, earthy fragrance. Stir the mixture gently to evenly distribute the oils throughout the wax.

4. Prepare the Containers

While the wax is cooling slightly, I prepare my containers by securing the wick in the center of the jar. I use a bit of melted wax to glue the wick to the bottom of the container, ensuring that it stays in place while the wax hardens. You can also use wick holders to keep the wick centered while the candle sets.

5. Pour the Wax

Once the wax has cooled to around 130°F, it’s time to pour it into the containers. Slowly pour the wax into the jars, making sure to leave about half an inch from the top. Let the wax cool and solidify completely before trimming the wick to about 1/4 inch above the surface of the candle.

6. Let the Candle Cure

Finally, allow the candle to cure for at least 24 hours before burning it. This gives the wax and oils time to settle and fully blend, ensuring that the candle burns evenly and releases its fragrance properly. I always find it exciting to light my homemade candles after waiting, knowing they’ve been crafted with care and natural ingredients.

4. Benefits of Homemade Candles with Essential Oils

Making my own candles has been a rewarding and enjoyable experience, and the use of essential oils has made the process even more fulfilling. Not only do I get to control the scents and the ingredients, but I also get to enjoy the therapeutic benefits of aromatherapy every time I light a candle. Essential oils can help reduce stress, promote relaxation, or even invigorate and uplift my mood. Whether I’m using lavender for relaxation or eucalyptus for a refreshing scent, homemade candles with essential oils enhance my home and contribute to a calming, pleasant atmosphere.

If you’ve never made your own candles before, I encourage you to give it a try. It’s a fun, creative project that allows you to personalize the scents and the ambiance in your home. Plus, homemade candles also make wonderful gifts! To get started with the best essential oils for candle making, check out Scent Snob for expert recommendations and the best quality oils.
