How Do You Scent Candles

written by Sarah Thompson Jan 07, 2025

What You Need to Know About Scenting Candles

When it comes to scented candles, there are several aspects you should consider. First, you need to choose the right type of wax. Soy wax is a popular choice as it's eco-friendly and works well with essential oils. Beeswax is another option, but it may not hold additional fragrances as effectively as soy wax. The type of fragrance you use also matters. Essential oils offer natural scents, while commercial fragrance oils can be stronger but may contain synthetic compounds.

Steps to Make Scented Candles

Start by choosing a heatproof container, such as a metal, ceramic, or glass vessel. Melt soy wax flakes in a double boiler, making sure to weigh the wax for accurate fragrance mixing. When the wax reaches 185°F (85°C), add your favorite essential oil or commercial fragrance oil. For essential oils, use about 2 teaspoons (9.9 mL) for every 4 ounces (110 g) of wax. If using commercial fragrance oil, use 1 fluid ounce (30 mL) for every 1 pound (450 g) of wax. You can also add dye and other decorative elements at this stage. Attach a wick to the bottom of the container with a wick sticker and pour the wax when it cools to 135°F (57°C). Let the wax harden for 24 hours and then trim the wick to 1/4 inch (0.64 cm).

Best Scents for Candles

Lavender creates a relaxing atmosphere and reduces stress. Cinnamon gives your home an inviting fall aroma. Peppermint helps improve focus and is great during the winter months. Citrus scents boost your mood and are fresh all year round. Vanilla is both relaxing and uplifting, making your home smell like sweet baked goods. Rosemary offers a fresh herbal scent and may boost your mood. Eucalyptus is calming and can act as an insect repellent. Citronella is effective in repelling insects, especially when used outdoors.

Tips and Precautions

Avoid using paraffin wax as it can release harmful chemicals when burned. Lay old newspapers on your work surface to make cleaning up any spills easier. If your container is larger than 3 1/2 inches (8.9 cm) in diameter, use multiple wicks for an even burn. You can also explore various online resources and tutorials for more inspiration and detailed instructions.

In conclusion, making scented candles is a fun and creative activity that allows you to customize the scents and looks of your candles to suit your preferences and needs. With the right materials, tools, and techniques, you can create beautiful and fragrant candles that enhance the ambiance of your home. Whether you prefer natural essential oils or commercial fragrances, the possibilities are endless. So, go ahead and give it a try!
