How Do You Make Your Own Scented Candles

written by Chloe Davis Jan 09, 2025

How to Make Your Own Scented Candles: A Detailed Guide

Making your own scented candles can be a fun and rewarding activity. Not only do you get to customize the scent and appearance, but you also have the satisfaction of creating something unique. Here's a detailed look at the process.

First, let's talk about the materials you'll need. For the wax, you can choose between soy wax flakes or beeswax pellets. Soy wax burns cleaner and is non-toxic, while beeswax has a lovely natural scent. You'll also need natural wicks, essential oils for fragrance (such as lavender, grapefruit, or eucalyptus), and containers like mason jars or glass jars.

The process begins by melting the wax in a pot over low-medium heat. It's important to stir the wax using a wood stirring device or a chopstick to ensure even melting. Once the wax is melted, add your chosen essential oils. The amount of essential oil depends on the type and potency, but typically around 80-120 drops are needed for a strong scent.

Anchor the wicks to the bottom of the containers using a bit of wax and tape them upright to a chopstick or pen. Then, carefully pour the melted wax into the containers and let it stand until it solidifies, which usually takes about an hour. Don't forget to cut the wick to the desired length once the wax has cooled and hardened.

There are a few tips to keep in mind. If you're concerned about your pot getting sticky, you can use a double boiler. And when choosing essential oils, consider their individual scents and how they blend together. You can also experiment with adding dried herbs or using fragrance oils for a stronger smell.

In conclusion, making your own scented candles is not only easy but also allows you to create a personalized and relaxing atmosphere in your home. With the right materials and a little patience, you'll have beautiful candles to enjoy or give as gifts.
