Are Scented Candles Bad for Cats?

written by Chloe Davis Jan 03, 2025

Are Scented Candles a Threat to Cats?

Candles have become a popular addition to many households for their aesthetic appeal and pleasant scents. But for cat owners, a crucial question arises: Are scented candles bad for cats? The answer is not straightforward and involves various factors.

The Hidden Risks

Paraffin wax candles, commonly used, can release cancer-causing particles and toxic fumes. The United States Environmental Protection Agency warns of the indoor air pollution they cause, which can be extremely harmful to both humans and pets. Essential oils often used in scented candles can also pose a significant risk to cats. Some essential oils, such as bitter almond, wintergreen, citrus, cinnamon, ylang-ylang, and tea tree oil, are toxic when ingested or come into contact with a cat's skin.

Impact on Cats' Health

Inhaling the fumes or coming into direct contact with these substances can lead to various health issues in cats. It could cause respiratory problems, coughing, shortness of breath, and in severe cases, even asthma attacks. Cats with existing respiratory conditions or asthma are especially vulnerable. Moreover, the flames of candles can cause burns, especially to a cat's sensitive whiskers, which could result in pain, infection, and dehydration.

Ensuring Safety

To keep our cats safe, it's essential to take certain precautions. Firstly, always supervise your cat when candles are lit. Secondly, ensure the room is well-ventilated to reduce the concentration of harmful fumes. When choosing candles, opt for safer options like beeswax or unscented candles. LED candles are a great alternative as they eliminate the fire risk altogether. It's also crucial to keep burning candles in areas that your cat cannot access, especially when you're not around to watch them.

Conclusion

In conclusion, scented candles can potentially be bad for cats. The risks include toxic fumes, harmful essential oils, and the danger of burns. However, by being vigilant, taking appropriate safety measures, and making informed choices, we can minimize these risks and create a safe environment for our beloved feline companions.
