How the k hall giveaway worked

K. Hall Designs makes mostly single note fragrances, such as Peony, Pomegranate, Moss and Lavender. We asked readers to imagine they were making a one note scent, and to post their answer for a chance to win a 3 wick candle.

We chose a random winner on Monday, March 21, 2011, and shipped the prize to any continental US address. The website had extra ways to enter, and I am glad so many readers took part.

The original post pointed to the contest page on our website for more ways to win. The question itself was the heart of it, and the answers were a delight to read.

I always read every comment on posts like this one. People wrote about gardens, grandparents, oceans and old books, and I learned a lot about my own customers.

We were curious how many different smells our readers would name. Some wrote about common flowers, some about foods, and a few chose smells I would never have thought of.

The k hall giveaway was one of our simplest questions, and one of the most fun.

What a one note scent really is

A single note fragrance is built around one smell, like a flower, a fruit or a bit of green. Most perfumes blend dozens of notes, so a one note candle is a different experience. It is simple, clear and easy to understand.

Perfumers think in layers of top, middle and base notes. The Wikipedia article on perfume notes explains the basic idea, and it shows why a single note candle feels so direct.

Moss, pomegranate and lavender, three of the single notes this maker is known for, are a good illustration. Moss is damp and green, pomegranate is bright and tart, and lavender is calm and herbal. None of them need explaining.

A single note is not always simple to make. A perfumer has to find a version of the smell that feels real, and that can be harder than blending ten notes together.

Candles built on a single note are also honest. There is nowhere for a weak ingredient to hide, and that is why the better makers put so much care into their one note blends.

The k hall giveaway fits the brand well, since K. Hall is all about single notes.

Choosing your own note

To answer the k hall giveaway question, start with a place or a moment instead of a scent name. Where were you happiest as a child? What was growing there?

The note often arrives by itself. A smell of cut grass, orange peel or old books can say more than a long list of ingredients.

Some readers want clean smells, like fresh laundry or rain. Others want something green, like moss, or something fruity, like pomegranate. There is no wrong answer, and your pick can change with the season.

A useful trick is to say your note out loud and see who in the room reacts. If someone says that smells like my grandmother’s house, you have chosen a note with real memory in it.

Try asking a friend to name their note before you name yours. The overlap, or the lack of it, is often very funny.

Answering the k hall giveaway question teaches you what you truly like.

Why single notes are easy to love

A single note candle is a good place to start if you are new to home fragrance. You do not have to untangle five scents to know if you like it. If you like lavender, you will like a lavender candle.

They are also easy to layer. Burn two single note candles in the same room and you can make your own blend, which is great fun on a quiet evening.

Back to our k hall giveaway question. If I had to pick one note, I would choose something green and woody, but ask me next week and the answer might be different.

Single notes teach your nose. After a few weeks with a pure lavender candle, you will pick out lavender in blends where you never noticed it before. That skill makes every future purchase easier.

One more thought on the k hall giveaway. The prize was a three wick candle, which is the large size that fills a big room, so choose a quiet corner for it and trim all three wicks before each burn.

If you were making your own one note scent today, what would it be? That is the real question behind the k hall giveaway, and it is still worth asking yourself.

Write your answer on paper first. Seeing it in your own handwriting tends to sharpen the choice, and you can compare notes with the answers other readers gave.

I hope the k hall giveaway made you think about your own favorite smell.
