Ecoya Giveaway

Ecoya glass jar candle with botanical sprigs, ecoya giveaway

Our ecoya giveaway asked readers for complete honesty about an Australian candle brand, with a gift pack worth over $100 as the reward for answering three questions.

Ecoya Giveaway Ecoya products are crafted in Botany Bay, Australia where 100’s of rich botanicals were cataloged in 1770. Ecoya products feature natural waxes, cotton wicks and sustainable botanicals.

Ecoya offers the black Sorrento jar candle ($39 for 70 hours), clear Metro jar candle ($29 for 50 hours), small ($13.50 for 15 hours) and large ($20 for 30 hours) travel tins, soy wax melts and diffusers ($50). Ecoya features 6 fragrances including:

  • Lemongrass & Ginger: a clean and refreshing citrus with lemon, thyme and lime. Well balanced and not heavy handed with hints of African mint.
  • Vanilla Bean: Butterscotch and vanilla tones, mouthwatering and edible. Rich luxurious layered, dense and full with hints of caramel and toffee.
  • Lotus Flower: Elusive pineapple and sweet cotton candy notes with a light floral aspect, almost lavender. Warm floral and comforting.
  • French Pear: Spicy cinnamon, star anise characteristics reminiscent of stewed apples with crumble. Hints of spice, juniper berries, cranberries, nutmeg and tropical fruit. Sweet with passion fruit notes.
  • Wild Frangipani: Voluptuous with complex buttery intricacies and subtle nuances of rose. A fragrance that builds in layers throughout the burn.
  • Sweet Pea & Jasmine: light and refreshing watermelon and cucumber tones with refreshing notes of lavender. Ecoya Giveaway

How the ecoya giveaway worked

We asked three questions: what do you like about Ecoya, what do you not like, and would you buy it? There were no right or wrong answers. The winner, chosen on April 4, 2011, received a pack with a four votive set, a diffuser and a Metro candle.

I like giveaways that ask for opinions, because the answers help a small shop decide what to stock. Honest critique is more useful to me than praise.

The ecoya giveaway also let readers practice the habit I wish everyone had. Think about why you like or dislike a thing before you spend money on it. A dislike is as informative as a like.

The ecoya giveaway asked for honesty, and honesty is what we got.

Where Ecoya comes from

Ecoya products are made in Botany Bay, Australia, a place where hundreds of botanicals were cataloged in 1770. The brand uses natural waxes, cotton wicks and sustainable botanicals. The Botany Bay covers the bay’s history if you want the background.

The range then included a black Sorrento jar, a clear Metro jar, travel tins, soy wax melts and diffusers. Prices and burn times in the original post were from 2011, so check the current page before you buy.

The fact that it is a candle, melt and diffuser brand also means you can scent a home in several ways. A diffuser can run all day in a hallway, while a candle suits an evening in the living room.

If sustainability matters to you, ask any maker what that word means in practice. A good one will have an answer.

Our ecoya giveaway began with the brand’s Australian roots.

The six scents

The line then had six fragrances. Lemongrass and Ginger is clean and citrusy, and Vanilla Bean is rich and buttery. Lotus Flower is a warm, comforting floral.

French Pear leans spicy, like stewed apples, and Wild Frangipani builds in layers as it burns. Sweet Pea and Jasmine is light and fresh, with a watermelon and cucumber feel.

If you cannot decide, think about what you want the room to feel like. Fresh and zesty, go Lemongrass and Ginger. Dessert like, go Vanilla Bean.

Warm and cozy, go French Pear.

Remember that scent descriptions are the makers’ words. The best test is always your own nose, and the shop happily sends scent samples if you ask.

The six scents in the ecoya giveaway ran from fresh to rich.

Why an ecoya giveaway is a good way to try a brand

A giveaway lets you test a brand without risk. If you win, you get to try a candle, and if you do not, you still had to think about what you like. Either way, the ecoya giveaway taught me what readers want from a candle.

Another contest worth a look is Trapp Giveaway Week, which also asked readers a question. And Bluewick Giveaway is a short read on a different brand’s contest.

When you answer a question like ours, be specific. Say which scent, which room, which season. The more detail you give, the more useful the answer is to the shop and to other readers.

Whatever you decide, an ecoya giveaway is a good reason to look at a brand slowly. Natural waxes and cotton wicks are a good start, and the rest is about how much you like the way the room smells afterward.

Take your time over the ecoya giveaway questions in your own head, even now. Writing your own list of likes and dislikes is a good habit for any brand you are curious about.

Thank you to everyone who joined the ecoya giveaway.
